Project Management Fundamentals

Project Management: Fundamentals overviews the basics of project management. It provides the theory and core methodology you will need to manage projects or participate on project teams. This course does not make use of any project management software application, but instead focuses on the conceptual underpinnings that students must know in order to use any project management software application effectively.

In this session you will learn how to:

  • Discuss the phases of the Project Management Life Cycle and a project manager's role in each phase.
  • List and discuss basic project success criteria and common reasons for project failure.
  • Discuss techniques for setting up a strong project team.
  • List and discuss elements of a Risk Management Plan.
  • Discuss techniques for planning and sequencing project activities, including the Work Breakdown Structure and the Network Logic Diagram.
  • Identify the Critical Path for completing a project on schedule.
  • List and discuss the cost elements that should be included in a project budget.
  • Discuss techniques for controlling for deviation from budgets and schedules.
  • Discuss key elements of project management communications and reporting tools.
  • Discuss key activities of project close-out.

Introduction

Students will probably get the most out of this course if they want to learn how to use Microsoft Project 2000 to assist them with project management. Students should have some project management experience and be familiar with terms such as Gantt Chart, task, critical path, and resource. Students should also be familiar with terms such as computer memory, data files, and program files. No knowledge of Microsoft Project 2000 is assumed.

  • Become familiar with project management software and plan a project by using Microsoft Project 2000.
  • Work with subtasks in an outline form, link tasks effectively, and work with time constraints.
  • Assign resources and their work schedules to tasks.

  • Effectively use the different views, reports, and drawing tools available in Microsoft Project 2000.
  • Sort and filter project information effectively.

Advanced

Students will learn how to use Microsoft Project 2000 to manage a project. This course meets the Microsoft Proficiency Guidelines for Microsoft Project 2000 at the Expert level.

In this session you will learn how to:

  • Create a baseline plan.
  • Track an active project
  • Manage tasks that will occur in the future.
  • Work with resource needs.
  • Customize Microsoft Project.
  • Work with data in other applications.
  • Work with a resource pool and subprojects and master projects.

Introduction

Welcome to Microsoft Project 2003: Level 1. This course is the first in a series of two courses designed for individuals who will use Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 as a tool to assist them in managing projects. The topics in this course cover the critical skills necessary to create and modify a project plan file that contains tasks, resources, and resource assignments.

In this session you will learn how to:

  • Create a project plan file and enter task information.
  • Create a work breakdown structure by organizing tasks and setting task relationships.
  • Assign project resources.
  • Finalize the project plan file.

Advanced

Microsoft Project 2003: Level 2 is the second course in the Microsoft Project 2003 series. In Microsoft Project 2003: Level 1 , you used your project management skills to create a complete project plan. This course will build upon that knowledge, and give you the opportunity to work with a project plan once it has entered the project implementation phase.

In this session you will learn how to:

  • Exchange project plan data with other applications.
  • Update a project plan.
  • Create custom reports.
  • Re-use existing project plan information
